Removal of cephalexin residues from wastewater is one of the most concerned issues in treatment plants due to the growing of the antibiotics consumption level around the world. In this study, the impact of the initial concentration of cephalexin residues on its removability by lemna minor was investigated by developing a grau model accounting for the cephalexin initial pH value. In the model, the second-order kinetic constants of adsorption were linked linearly with the influent pH values. Results showed that using lemna minor along with phytoremediation process increased the removal efficiency value to 86.5% and dropped chemical oxygen demand (COD) to 0.012 mg/L in effluent, making the removability of cephalexin from the polluted water easier. In addition, it was found that changing the grau model kinetic constants linearly (positively or negatively) with pH affects the removal efficiency. Based on the results, the best removability can be noticed at the pH level of 7 with a value of 71%.

In this paper we presented a case study about the removal of a pharmaceutical contamination (in this case Meropenem) from the environment using organic natural substance (in this case study is Lemna minor). The study proved the efficiency of the used material to remove the contamination of three specific contamination levels of Meropenem. The experimental testing proved the concept, the effect on two vital measures (the chemical oxygen demand – COD, and the root length), which showed improvement in both measures. The degradation mechanism was proven to be not arbitrary by testing the degradation behavior measured practically to four kinetic models. The practical work was found to fit perfectly with the Grau second order model as the simulation work included in the paper shows. Based on this study it can be proven that the dangerous chemicals resulted from the residue of a pharmaceutical substances can be removed efficiently using a totally natural environmental friendly material.

Reaction term in the transport equation which described the migration of metal ions in the porous medium is frequently represented by conventional kinetic models such as pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and others. Unfortunately, these models are applicable for the constant value of solution pH, and they cannot simulate the real situation in the field scale where this pH may be changed with time. Accordingly, the present study is a good attempt to derive the kinetic model that can simulate the change in the pH of the solution through solute transport. This was achieved by modifying the adsorption capacity and reaction constant to be functions in terms of solution pH by using semianalytical analysis and numerical approximation. The results proved that the kinetic model based on the numerical approximation (using exponential functions for adsorption capacity and reaction constant) symbolled as model 2 was more representative from other models applied for the description of interaction of nickel ions (with initial concentration of 400 mg/L) and cement kiln dust with sum of squared error ≤1.54913 and determination coefficient ≥0.889. Also, the developed models had high ability for recognizing between pure precipitation and pure adsorption.
