Environmental quality assessment of groundwater resources in Al Jabal Al Akhdar, Sultanate of Oman

Abstract: The research was conducted to assess the quality of groundwater resources of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, Oman. 11 drinking water sources were sampled during summer and winter seasons during 2012-2013 to evaluate their physicochemical quality indicators; and assess their suitability for drinking and other domestic purposes. Sample collection, handling and processing followed the standard methods recommended by APHA and analyzed in quality assured laboratories using appropriate analytical methods and instrumental techni… Show more

“…Also, the samples were plotted with a Stiff diagram and projected with ArcGIS v. 10.3 (Figure 4). Piper's diagram is a suitable method to reveal the relations, dissimilarities and to classify water types based on the ionic composition of different groundwater samples [46]. The main water types were identified and categorized on the basis of significant ion concentrations, arranged in decreasing order of abundance, where the percentage reveals the amount of groundwater samples that fall into a water type.…”

“…Similar to previous studies (Almasri andKaluarachchi, 2003, 2005;Almasri, 2007;Fallahzadeh et al, 2016;Gallagher and Gergel, 2017), this study aimed at predicting groundwater nitrate concentrations in a region of mixed land uses to control the environmental quality. As very few studies (Hu et al, 2005;Li et al, 2014;Al-Kalbani et al, 2017) have spatially linked groundwater nitrate concentrations to land use, land cover, our work provides an important approach that is highly relevant to other regions facing similar management challenges. Accordingly, the objectives of this study were to analyze the extent of nitrate concentration in groundwater in the Southern High-Plains and Edwards-Trinity aquifers of Texas in the USA and to identify land uses that have significant impacts on nitrate concentrations of groundwater using multivariate statistical analysis and geographically weighted regression (GWR) models in the Southern High-Plains and Edwards-Trinity aquifers in Texas.…”
