“…In the course of our work, place became a relational concept, the definition of which belonged to the members of the co-producing community – what mattered what their sense of place (see Stedman 2003 ). Sense of place is an integrative concept ( Saarinen et al 1982 ), and it carries both the characteristics of the environment and of the individual or group perceiving it. Sense of place connects with place attachment, and others have shown, as we observed, how memory is critical for migrant populations’ relationships to places ( Rishbeth and Powell 2013 ).…”
