Environmental life cycle assessments of emerging anode materials for Li‐ion batteries‐metal oxide NPs

Abstract: Lithium ion batteries are widely used to meet ever‐growing energy demands. They are also considered as energy storage devices to decrease the concerns about limited energy sources and associated environmental issues by displacing a large fraction of gasoline use in HEV and PHEV. Due to these concerns, intensive research on alternative energy conversion and storage systems with high efficiency, low cost, and environmental benignity has been stimulated worldwide. Recently, nanostructured 3d‐metal oxides MOx (M =… Show more

“…Ecosystems and their different organisms have been widely impacted by anthropogenic activities such as the discharge of pollutants (Hamidian et al 2019 ; Mirzajani et al 2016 , 2015 ; Padash Barmchi et al 2015 ; Rezaei Kalvani et al 2019 ), including emerging contaminants (Jafari Ozumchelouei et al 2020 ) such as microplastics. Endurance, flexibility, lightweight, being low cost and being waterproof allows for plastic use in different applications, leading to their accumulation in the environment (Pellini et al 2018 ; Razeghi et al 2020 ).…”

“…Scientific studies of the ecological impacts of lithium extraction from brines are still rare. Life-cycle assessments of electric vehicles do not single lithium out as problematic for the environment; instead, factors like the metal oxide paired with lithium (Padashbarmchi et al, 2015) and the source of electricity matter more (Oliveira et al, 2015). The sustainability of electric vehicles, these studies claim, will depend on other issues like battery lifetimes, manufacturing and recycling.…”

“…LCA, applied with success to several areas, provides more information for the development of products and helps in the decision-making process (Zackrisson et al 2010;Li et al 2014;Peters et al 2017;Hu et al 2018). Several LCA studies on LIBs are available in the literature (Ellingsen et al 2014;Li et al 2014;Padashbarmchi et al 2015;Vandepaer et al 2017), with many of them focused on LIBs for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (Zackrisson et al 2010;Ellingsen et al 2014Ellingsen et al , 2017Li et al 2014). On the contrary, at the best of the authors' knowledge, only a LCA study focused on the evaluation of the environmental impact of the SIBs is available in the literature (Peters et al 2016), most probably because the SIB technology has not reached the needed maturity yet.…”
