Environmental indices for France, Italy and the UK

Abstract: To improve the information available to the public, it is important to bring environmental reports and statistics to life. Environmental indices can do this, just as indices of prices, unemployment and output do for the economy. Previous environmental indices for public information are reviewed and new environmental indices developed for France, Italy and the UK.

“…The average annual growth rates of the economy and CEI during 1986-1995were 8Ð5% and 5Ð3%, respectively. During 1986-1989, the CEI growth rate exceeded the economic growth rate by approximately one percentage point, which implies that Korea failed to accomplish a sustainable development in the process of attaining national goals during those years.…”

“…9 In choosing environmental indicators, current availability of data is crucial. Hope et al (1995) selected environmental indicators based on data comparability and usefulness, because those criteria, in reality, were much more important than the priority and scientific confidence of the environmental problems. Adriaanse (1993) considered the representing capacity of coreset indicators and the simplicity of data management.…”

“…Environmental quality indices (EQIs) make a more balanced attempt to provide algorithms for calculating combined scores in a variety of environmental measures (Inhaber (1974) in Canada, Hope and Parker (1995) in France, Italy and the UK, Puolamaa et al (1996) in The Netherlands, Sang et al (2002) in Korea). In the UK, for example, the South-West Observatory EQI for govern-ment and local stakeholders in that region of the country includes measures of pollution, derelict land, flood risk, river quality, green space, street cleanliness, poor housing, fly-tipping and biodiversity (South West Observatory 2007).…”

“…The creation of frameworks and theories for computing the environmental index was already addressed by Ott [45]. Other researchers also calculated the environmental index (EI) [46][47][48][49][50] and worked on creating new frameworks so that the EI may present condensed environmental information [51][52][53][54].…”
