Environmental implications of increased US oil production and liberal growth agenda in post -Paris Agreement era

Abstract: Contextualising on the internationally low oil prices era and historically high oil production in USA and refusal to honour the commitments under Paris Agreement (COP: 21), this study investigates the role of education, oil prices and natural resources on CO 2 emissions and energy demand in the USA for the period of 1976-2016. In so doing, we employed a bounds testing approach to cointegration which also accounts for the structural breaks. Key findings suggest the presence of a long-run association between und… Show more

“…(2019) on ASEAN reported very weak evidence of the EKC hypothesis, whereas the study by Pham et al. (2020) on European economies and Shahbaz et al. (2020) on the US reported strong evidence of the EKC hypothesis, suggesting crucial differences among countries.…”

“…On the other hand, due to growing anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, there has been a continuous increase in the possibility of a catastrophic climate change ( Committee on Climate Change, 2019 ). The climate is rapidly changing and planet Earth is warming, potentially more than the targeted increase to a maximum of 2 °C above pre-industrial levels ( Shahbaz et al. 2020 ).…”

“…The greener growth and low‐carbon economy objectives can be achieved by encouraging the technological innovations, as the technological growth has contributed toward advancement in cleaner energy sources and benefited several economies to maximize the use of renewable energy sources (Wang, Mirza, Vasbieva, Abbas, & Xiong, 2020). Recently, few of the studies have argued that technological innovation and renewable energies contribute to sustainable economic growth and low‐carbon economy (Shahbaz, Kablan, Hammoudeh, Ali, & Kontoleon, 2020; Wang, Vo, Shahbaz, & Ak, 2020). In line with these arguments, Fotis and Polemois (2018) concluded that an increasing the use of new technology more efficient energy use and renewable energy capacity would alleviate environmental pressure, for EU countries.…”

“…Since 1880, the earth’s temperature, has escalated by 1.4° Fahrenheit on account of GHGs. Among these GHGs as Figure 1 depicts, the share of carbon dioxide (CO2) is virtually 81% (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2020), and therefore, the paramount interest of the recent researchers is to divulge the significant drivers of CO2 emissions for climate policies (Chishti et al, 2020; Shahbaz, Kablan, et al, 2020; Shahbaz, Nasir, et al, 2020; Ullah et al, 2020). Concurrently, it is equally crucial to discern how CO2 emissions (CO2e) are measured.…”
