Environmental Impacts of Energy Saving Actions in an Academic Building

Abstract: Global warming and climate change effects have been of such impact that several countries around the world are enforcing public policies to mitigate them. Mexico has shown a strong commitment to the environment and rational use of energy, as signed on the General Law for Climate Change (GLCC) and stating, in its second article, the goal of a 30% reduction of greenhouse gases by 2020. To add to this goal, the Hermosillo Institute of Technology is implementing a pilot energy saving program that mixes retrofittin… Show more

“…Previous studies show that conserving energy and other resources or using them efficiently reduces the negative impact of energy use on the environment [41][42][43][44] and positively affects a company's financial performance. Therefore, paying attention to the efficient use of energy in the workplace can positively affect both the environment and the company.…”

“…Zhang Y. et al designed a microcontroller-based energy-saving classroom control system, which can detect the luminous intensity and the number of people through sensors to manage the light resources in the classroom [6] . In addition, the Hermosillo Institute of Technology in Mexico developed a building automation control system in 2018, which uses Ethernet and ZigBee networks for communication, but requires the renovation of the teaching building by replacing lighting, ventilation, air conditioning, and other equipment to achieve this, which is costly [7] . Octavio et al developed an IoT system for energy consumption to monitor energy consumption and energy management in buildings.…”

“…To mitigate the agency problem in EER, the principal (government) has to design the optimal incentive to induce more agent's (owner's) efforts on EER that can optimize the principal's utility. The principal-agent model is to solve the optimization problem under individual rationality constraint (IR) and the incentive compatibility constraint (IC), shown in Equation (8).…”

“…For a public building, more than 80% of life-cycle energy use is consumed after the building is occupied [3]. Therefore, an energy-efficiency retrofit (EER) is a promising means of energy saving in public buildings which has attracted more attention in recent years [4][5][6][7][8].…”
