Environmental Impacts of Biodiesel Production Cycle from Farm to Manufactory: An Application of Sustainable Systems Engineering

Abstract: One of the key challenges in using fossil fuels is the environmental impacts of these energy sources, and to reduce these destructive effects, the use of renewable energy sources (biofuels) is necessary. One of the important biofuels is biodiesel, which can be produced from cottonseed. To properly manage the chain dealing with biodiesel production from the cottonseed chain (from farm to manufactory), environmental hotspots must be pinpointed. In the present study, it was attempted to examine the environmental … Show more

“…The motivation to search for alternative energy sources is a result of the depletion of fossil resources, growing energy prices, and negative environmental impact [1,2]. The global irreversible, long-term trend for increase in energy consumption [3,4] requires new energy sources [5,6] in order to guarantee energy security with simultaneous environmental sustainability [7,8].…”

“…Therefore, finding alternative energy sources and advanced energy use technologies is crucial in reducing dependence on fossil fuels, GHG emissions, and the greenhouse effect without negatively affecting population and economic growth [5][6][7]. Studies have shown that the development of renewable energy and modern energy utilization technologies is an effective solution to the problems of climate change, energy stress, and waste management [8][9][10]. Biogas projects, as a form of renewable energy, have great potential in the development of modern energy utilization [11].…”
