Environmental impacts of barley cultivation under current and future climatic conditions

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe purpose of this work is to compare the environmental impacts of spring barley cultivation in Denmark under current (year 2010) and future (year 2050) climatic conditions. Therefore, a Life Cycle Assessment was carried out for the production of 1 kg of spring barley in Denmark, at farm gate. Both under 2010 and 2050 climatic conditions, four subscenarios were modelled, based on a combination of two soil types and two climates. Included in the assessment were seed production, soil preparation,… Show more

“…Lack of attention to climate changes at the present time is fraught with major economic consequences in the future [17][18][19]. No economy in the world today is able to actively resist global climate changes and the increasing frequency of formation of extreme weather events.…”

“…Finally, we draw the attention to the work by Dijkman et al [55], where the environmental impact of barley cultivation under current and future climatic conditions is analyzed using aLCA. Dijkman et al [55] found that a predicted decrease in barley yields under future climate conditions is the main driver for increased impacts. An increased impact was not substantiated by the present study based on cLCA and including all of the ingredients of compound pig feed.…”
