Although a growing body of research has debated the array of sustainability lessons of vernacular architecture, social sustainability discussions remain less advanced in comparison to the other pillars of sustainability. This has narrowed the plural lessons of vernacular architecture and limited the broad concept of sustainability to a partial one. Against this research gap, this study aims to conduct an assessment of the social sustainability of residential vernacular architecture through the application of a proposed Social Criteria of Green Building Assessment Tool (SCGBAT) assessment method. The SCGBAT proposes eight sets of social criteria categories namely; health and safety; participation and control; education; equity, accessibility and satisfaction; social cohesion; cultural values; physical resilience and also, 37 indicators for the evaluation of social sustainability. To empirically operationalize the proposed SCGBAT, this study utilizes the vernacular architecture typologies in the vernacular landscape of Louroujina village in Cyprus as a case study. Methods for data collection are desk review for secondary data while 135 close-ended questionnaires were used for primary data. The data are statistically presented based on Linkert scale and interpreted using both quantitative and descriptive analysis. The results demonstrated that the investigated vernacular architecture ranked lowly in Physical Resilience Indicator (PRI), Environmental Education Indicator (EEI), Accessibility and Satisfaction Indicator (ASI) but demonstrated sufficient lessons in the context of Health and Safety Indicator (HSI); Participation and Control Indicator (PCI); Social Equity Indicator (SEI); Social Cohesion Indicator (SCI); and Cultural Value Indicator (CVI). To this end, this paper contribute to the advancement of knowledge on the assessment of the social sustainability of vernacular architecture by innovatively applying a green building assessment approach and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of such approach in a vernacular setting.

The building sector is partially in charge of the exhaustion of conventional energy sources, global warming, and environmental pollution. This experimental investigation is devoted to the study of the thermal behaviour of three different building materials used in Algeria, namely sheep wool, traditional brick, and ordinary brick, under real conditions. Three identical chambers were built made of the above-cited materials. Three temperature sensors were placed in the center of the three chambers, which were aligned and separated by approximately 10 cm. The digital acquisition system based on the Arduino board allows us to measure and record temperatures in the middle of the three well-closed rooms for one day (day and night) by oneminute steps. The temperature of the ambient air (outdoor temperature), used as a reference, was taken too. It is found that the thermo-physical properties (thermal diffusivity) of the building materials, in addition to the thickness of the building envelope (walls and roof), play an important role in the heat exchange between the indoor and outdoor. This study aims to encourage the reuse of the traditional bricks seen their advantages in energy saving and environmental preservation.

This paper deals with numerical modelling of the elastic properties of the rice straw-clay composite. This composite material is currently attracting interest because of its low impact on the environment but also for economic reasons. Benefiting from the advantages of a promising building material, straw reinforced composites attract more attention. This work allowed to model the effect of the straw inclusions on the elastic properties of the composite by a numerical approach considering the aspect ratio, the volume fraction, the orientation and the distribution of the straw inclusions. The Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme for the RVEs is done using Digimat-MF software and the 3D composite microstructure models are generated by the Digimat-FE software. This made it possible to calculate the effective elastic properties of the clay-rice straw composites by numerical simulation. An empirical linear correlation between the volume fraction of the inclusions and the Young's modulus has been proposed. The results obtained can help to better control the formulation of the composite in developing countries.
