“…Unfortunately, conventional pollution remediation methods show limited performances. For instance, in the field of water treatment adsorption or coagulation methods aim at concentrating pollutants by transferring them to other phases; sedimentation, filtration, chemical and membrane technologies involve high operating costs and can generate toxic secondary pollutants in the ecosystem [4]; and chlorination, although widely used in disinfection processes, can generate by-products associated with cancer or other pathologies [5].…”

“…Living foraminifera species were used as ecological indicators in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean and the Adriatic Sea. The proximity of coral reefs to wastewater‐impacted river discharge from the Buranhém River, Brazil, was found to be associated with lower density of foraminifera ( Amphistegina gibbosa ) populations and higher frequency of bleaching (Marques et al, 2019), while differences in total density, species richness, dominance, and ecological quality indices were observed between a wastewater‐impacted site and a marine reserve location in the Gulf of Trieste (Adriatic Sea) (Melis et al, 2019).…”

“…They were labeled station two (S2; Carapindaúba Reef -16°25'43.0"S, 039°01'29.9"W) and station four (S4; Labirinto Reef -16°25'06.1"S, 038°59'27.0"W), located approximately 4 and 8km away from the river mouth, respectively (Fig. 1; Leite et al, 2018;Marques et al, 2019). We maintained their previously designated nomenclatures to facilitate comparisons with published studies (Leite et al, 2018;Marques et al, 2019).…”
