Environmental Flows in the Lower Ebro River and Delta: Current Status and Guidelines for a Holistic Approach

Abstract: Deltas are a particular type of estuarine system in which the dependence on river flow (water, sediments and nutrients) is very strong, especially in river-dominated deltas such as the Mediterranean ones, but environmental flow (e-flow) proposals for deltaic systems are scarce. The Ebro Delta is one of the largest wetland areas in the western Mediterranean and one of the most important estuarine systems in Europe. The aim of this paper is to review the state of the art regarding e-flows and to carry out a crit… Show more

“…Specifically, different vegetation indices and the Random Forest model were used to look at long-term datasets that had a large number of data points. In the study of the Nestos Delta the impacts of the alteration of hydrologic regime due to the dam construction were found to be similar to those reported in other studies [84][85][86]. Based on the eight indices it appears that low density vegetation is being impacted more by the flow regulation.…”

“…Other non-sediment (i.e., freshwater) MEDs have already been implemented along the lower Mississippi River over the past 30 years (Turner et al, 2019). And although the concept of MEDs of various types (sediment and freshwater) as a solution to specific coastal erosion problems in Louisiana remains a topic of considerable debate, the exploration of MEDs (and ecological flows "e-flows" more broadly) for ecosystem protection and restoration in coastal Louisiana (eCFR, 2022a) and other major river deltas throughout the world (Ibanez et al, 2020), is likely to increase in the future.…”
