Fatty acids (FAs) have been extensively used as indicators of foraging ecology in marine mammals, yet their association with exposure to contaminants has rarely been investigated. The present study provided the first characterization of the relationship between hepatic FA profiles and exposure to a suite of contaminants in a sentinel speciesthe harbor seal (Phoca vitulina)from the Gulf of Maine and the south coast of Sweden. FA profiles differed in the two seal populations, and the levels of legacy and alternative brominated flame retardants and polyhalogenated carbazoles were significantly elevated in Maine seals. Correlations between individual FAs and multiple flame retardants (FRs) and poly-and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were found in seals from both populations. Moreover, several FR and PFAS chemicals were significantly associated with the estimated desaturating enzyme activity inferred from the FA profiles. The ratios of poly to monounsaturated FAs (∑PUFAs/∑MUFAs) and those of unsaturated to saturated FAs (∑UFAs/∑SFAs) were significantly associated with HBBZ, PFHxS, or BDE 47 in seals from Maine and Sweden, whereas ∑n − 6/∑n − 3 PUFAs was significantly associated with BDE 154 and 36-CCZ in Swedish and Maine seals, respectively. Our results suggest the lipid metabolism-disrupting potential of these contaminants in marine mammals and warrant continuous biomonitoring and risk assessment, considering the critical role of PUFAs in vital biological processes.

Much progress has been made in the past few decades in understanding the sources, transport, fate, and biological effects of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in aquatic ecosystems. Despite these advancements, significant obstacles still prevent comprehensive assessments of the environmental risks associated with the presence of CECs. Many of these obstacles center around the extrapolation of effects of single chemicals observed in the laboratory or effects found in individual organisms or species in the field to impacts of multiple stressors on aquatic food webs. In the present review, we identify 5 challenges that must be addressed to promote studies of CECs from singular exposure events to multispecies aquatic food web interactions. There needs to be: 1) more detailed information on the complexity of mixtures of CECs in the aquatic environment, 2) a greater understanding of the sublethal effects of CECs on a wide range of aquatic organisms, 3) an ascertaining of the biological consequences of variable duration CEC exposures within and across generations in aquatic species, 4) a linkage of multiple stressors with CEC exposure in aquatic systems, and 5) a documenting of the trophic consequences of CEC exposure across aquatic food webs. This study evaluated the influence of dietary supplementation with freeze-dried powder of Ampithoe sp. (FDPA) on the growth, energy metabolism, and resistance to ammonia-nitrogen stress in Litopenaeus vannamei. There were four treatment groups: a 0% group (no FDPA addition), a 33% group, a 66% group (33% and 66% of the shrimp diet, respectively, replaced with FDPA), and a 100% group (only FDPA). The results of this study suggested a positive effect of FDPA supplementation on shrimp survival: the supplemented groups had significantly higher survival than the 0% group (p < 0.05). The body length, body weight, and specific growth rate (SGR) of the 33% group were higher than those of the other groups and were significantly higher than that of the 100% group (p < 0.05). FDPA feeding had a negative effect on carbohydrate metabolism pathways and energy consumption due to decreases in pyruvate kinase (PK), phosphofructokinase (PFK), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), and respiratory electron transport system (ETS) activity in shrimp fed FDPA during the culture period. The shrimp in the 33% group exhibited good resistance to ammonia-nitrogen stress. Additionally, the glycolysis pathway and energy consumption of shrimp in the 33% group were enhanced during the ammonia-nitrogen stress period. Consequently, it was inferred that FDPA supplementation could improve the resistance of shrimp to ammonia-nitrogen stress (in the 33% group), which might be related to the effects of the supplement on energy metabolism pathways, particularly in terms of enhancing glycolysis to provide sufficient energy for the stress response.
