Environmental Enrichment Improved Learning and Memory, Increased Telencephalic Cell Proliferation, and Induced Differential Gene Expression in Colossoma macropomum

Abstract: sedentary. Flow cytometry analysis of peripheral blood showed a significantly higher density of lymphocytes, and platelets but no significant differences in erythrocytes and granulocytes. Thus, under the influence of contrasting environments, our findings showed differential changes at the behavioral, cellular, and molecular levels. We propose that the differential expression of selected transcripts, number of telencephalic cell counts, learning and memory performance, and selective hematological cell changes … Show more

“…Similarly, age and sex of fish can impact performance – again sticklebacks provide clear examples whereby males and females exhibit differences in cognitive performance (Keagy et al, 2019 ). Finally, fish that have been housed with levels of environmental complexity or predator regimes can exhibit differences in cognitive performance (DePasquale et al, 2021 ; Odling‐Smee & Braithwaite, 2003b ; Pereira et al, 2020 ; Salvanes et al, 2013 ; Spence et al, 2011 ), and behavioural responses such as measures of behavioural lateralization (Sundin et al, 2023 ). Broad generalizations from the results of this study should be made with care, as the authors studied animals from a single population in each experiment.…”

“…Recently, an increasing amount of evidence has hinted that EE can improve memory and delay age-related cognitive dysfunctions [ 205 , 206 ]. Early exposure of EE to AD transgenic rodents was previously found to delay the onset of memory deficits as well as improve neuropathological hallmarks [ 207 , 208 , 209 ].…”

“…Nonetheless, little is known about the genes expressed in distinct areas of encephalon in Tambaqui. A report by 10 analyzed the transcriptome of telencephalon of Tambaqui raised under distinct conditions of physical activity, revealing that specimens exposed to exercises were characterized by an increased number of positively regulated genes related to memory and learning as well as faster growth. However, this transcriptome was obtained from juvenile specimens while data about adult and sexually mature fish remain unpublished.…”

“…Furthermore, the captive specimens are exposed to stressful environments distinct from those found in wild. Even after replicating natural conditions such as water currents, the natural breeding of Tambaqui has not been accomplished in captivity and positive regulation of genes related to stress stimuli has been reported 10 . Therefore, taking into account the importance of Tambaqui in aquaculture and the reliability of next generation molecular data in analyses of functional genomics, the present study provided useful information for further research by generating the first functional annotation of differentially expressed genes in the Neurotranscriptoma of adult males and females of C. macropomum .…”
