Environmental Effects on the Globular Cluster Blue Straggler Population: a Statistical Approach

Abstract: Context. Blue stragglers stars (BSS) constitute an ubiquitous population of objects whose origin involves both dynamical and stellar evolution. Aims. In this paper we study the properties of a catalogue of BSS extracted from an homogeneous sample of 56 Galactic globular clusters (GC) observed with Wide-Field Planetary Camera 2 on board of Hubble Space Telescope (WFPC2/HST). Methods. With the purpose of investigating the environmental dependence of the BSS formation mechanisms, we explore possible monovariate r… Show more

“…Among these, BSSs are certainly the most abundant and they are the easiest to distinguish from normal stars in a color-magnitude diagram (CMD), since they define a sort of sequence extending brighter and bluer than the cluster MS-TO point, mimicking a subpopulation of young stars (see Fig. 1 ;Sandage, 1953;Ferraro et al, 1992Ferraro et al, , 1993Ferraro et al, , 1997aFerraro et al, , 2003Leigh et al, 2007;Moretti et al, 2008;Simunovic & Puzia, 2016;Parada et al, 2016).…”
