Environmental Effects on the Coefficient of Friction and Tack Adhesion of Formulated Waterborne Coatings

Abstract: Waterborne coatings emit a low amount of harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere compared to solvent-cast coatings. A typical waterborne formulation for agricultural applications consists of colloidal thermoplastic particles (latex) as the binder, a thickener to raise the viscosity, inorganic filler particles with a water-soluble dispersant, and a colloidal wax to modify surface properties. The formulations typically contain hygroscopic species that are potentially subject to softening by… Show more

“…During adhesive wear, there was a formation of microdeposits between the contact pair of materials (ball + experimental sample), which caused a constant change in the roughness of both surfaces and thus led to the occurrence of plastic deformation. The occurrence of plastic deformation was also caused by the state of hardness, while it is generally true that the proportion of plastic deformation in the friction process increases with decreasing hardness [ 43 , 44 ].…”

“…Their tasks are varied. Most often, it comes down to protection against damage, including mechanical damage and corrosion [1,2], or it changes the nature of the physical contact of two cooperating parts by, for example, changing the coefficient of friction and the coefficient of abrasive wear [3,4].…”
