Environmental Effects on HV Dielectric Materials and Related Sensing Technologies

Abstract: The increase in recent power failures, with negative impacts on humans and the economy, has been largely attributed to environmental effects and the aging of the power network. These have been accelerated in the last years due to two main factors: an increased load on the power network and material degradation owing to the presence of environmental pollutants. These factors together with specific weather conditions create the incipient conditions for power network degradation. In this paper, a review of the in… Show more

“…Before the experiment was carried out, polymer insulators were placed in an open place, so they could be exposed to direct sunlight or rain. The purpose of the insulator being placed in the open was to condition the insulator to experience natural aging by exposing the insulator to heat from sunlight and water from rainwater [21]. The polymer insulator was placed in the open for 13 weeks.…”

“…As a remarkable fraction (>40%) of an atmospheric aerosol is composed of watersoluble compounds [12,13], a direct consequence is its hygroscopicity, such as in saline deposit layers, which causes an aerosol to pass into a liquid phase [14][15][16]. This phenomenon happens when soluble pollution species dissociate in ions, acquiring conductive characteristics.…”

“…3 Despite the advantages of the use of polymeric insulators, there are many concerns related to them, such as the diversity of polymeric materials and additives and the reliable prediction of the lifetime of these insulators, among others. 4,5 Aging studies are extremely important for the development of more resistant materials, as well as additives, for increasing the lifetime of polymers. 6 The use of accelerated aging methods makes possible the prediction of material behavior and their lifetime, at short periods of exposure.…”
