Environmental Attitudes and Desired Social-Psychological Benefits of Off-Highway Vehicle Users

Abstract: This research analyzes the relationships between off-highway vehicle (OHV) riders' patterns of prior experience and the social-psychological benefits they desire from the activity; it also examines the relationships between patterns of prior experience and environmental attitudes. The sample consists of 600 OHV riders in Utah drawn from the entire population of OHV owners within the state. The sample was segmented into experience use history groups based upon respondents' number of OHV trips within the past 12… Show more

“…These results can be important for land-use planning in our study areas. In these areas, outdoor recreation and energy development have increased in the last 40 years and are predicted to continually increase (Smith and Burr, 2011;Sproat et al, 2019). Several of the forms of recreation We report the number of parameters (K), Akaike's Information Criterion adjusted for small sample sizes (AICc), difference in AICc value from top model ( AICc), AICc model weight (ωi), and log likelihood (LL).…”

“…Canoe route choices in a Canadian wilderness area were influenced by past experience and knowledge of the setting, with more experienced or knowledgeable canoeists choosing routes that are more remote and with the least amount of management intervention (McFarlane, Boxall, & Watson, 1998). Similarly, the desired benefits or motivations of ORV recreationists have been shown to vary, possibly affecting behaviors and setting preferences (Smith & Burr, 2011). The social dynamics within groups has been theorized to have greater influence on site choice than past experience or setting preferences (Kuentzel & Heberlein, 1992).…”

“…While ROV use in open areas provides pleasure, excitement, and social benefits to users [5,6], it often causes harm to the environment, especially where regulation and enforcement are lacking. ROV-induced damage in natural environments is well documented [7][8][9], especially in habitats that have low productivity, resistance, and resilience, such as boreal and arid ecosystems [10][11][12][13][14][15], dunes [16][17][18][19], and sandy beaches [20][21][22].…”
