Environment, Ram Pressure, and Shell Formation in Holmberg II

Abstract: Neutral hydrogen VLA D-array observations of the dwarf irregular galaxy HoII, a prototype galaxy for studies of shell formation, are presented. These were extracted from the multi-configuration dataset of Puche et al. (1992). H I is detected to radii over 16 ′ or 4R 25 , almost a factor of two better than previous studies. The total H I mass M HI = 6.44 × 10 8 M ⊙ . The integrated H I map has a comet-like appearance, with a large but faint component extending to the northwest and the H I appearing compressed o… Show more

“…(10) to include magnetic fields is not a trivial task. Moreover, if we consider that the interstellar medium in dwarf galaxies is heterogeneous and has varying density, we expect hydrostatic turbulent pressure to act in differently way in a different regions of a dwarf galaxy (Bureau & Carignan 2002). Finally, tightly related to the studies of star formation and environmental effects is the problem of gas removal from dwarf galaxies.…”

“…This implies, that other mechanisms might be employed to explain these structures: ram pressure (Bureau & Carignan 2002) or the infall of a high-velocity cloud to the disk (Tenorio-Tagle et al 1987). These events might be responsible for a fraction of HI shells, but probably not for the majority.…”

“…Thus, the plane of polarization of the observed synchrotron radiation is directly related to the component of the magnetic field perpendicular to the LOS (B ⊥ ) in the observed object. Moreover, the synchrotron emissivity is proportional to Article published by EDP Sciences References: (1) de Blok et al (2008); (2) Paturel et al (2003); (3) ; (4) Bureau & Carignan (2002); (5) Kamphuis & Briggs (1992); (6) Jarrett et al (2003); (7) Braun (1995); (8) de Vaucouleurs et al (1991); (9) Tamburro et al (2008).…”
