Environment and Safety Impacts of Additive Manufacturing: A Review

Abstract: The paper is focused on additive manufacturing (AM) which is the process of producing objects from a three-dimensional (3D) model by joining materials layer by layer, as opposed to the subtractive manufacturing methodologies [1], directly from raw material in powder, liquid, sheet, or a filament form without the need for moulds, tools, or dies. The article demonstrates potential environmental implications of additive manufacturing related to the key issues including energy use, occupational health, waste and l… Show more

“…Additive manufacturing and the respective technologies have opened up a vast field of research activities, ranging from detailed aspects of different manufacturing processes and materials (e.g., [89][90][91][92][93][94][95]) and design for additive manufacturing (e.g., [96][97][98][99]) to hybrid manufacturing (e.g., [100][101][102]), Industry 4.0 (e.g., [103][104][105]), and sustainability (e.g., [98,[106][107][108][109][110]).…”

“…But the research gap in AM process such as tooling, advantage based on only homogeneous material, and decisions making for choosing AM process [1,2,39]. e common key issues of the AM are, namely, occupational health, energy usage, lifecycle impact, and waste usage [40]. In the AM, only the consumer may involve in the manufacturing process to share their design ideas or concept.…”

“…Additive manufacturing has acquired a great interest from the global industrial panorama since its appearance in the late 1980s, gaining ground in diverse sectors, as being considered a technology capable to guide the industry towards an environmentally sustainable direction [1][2][3][4]. This direction is due to its characteristics such as the efficient use of resources (raw materials and energy), as well as the reduction of CO 2 emissions derived from its processes [3,[5][6][7][8][9].…”
