Enviro-HIRLAM online integrated meteorology–chemistry modelling system: strategy, methodology, developments and applications (v7.2)

Abstract: Abstract. The Environment -High Resolution Limited Area Model (Enviro-HIRLAM) is developed as a fully online integrated numerical weather prediction (NWP) and atmospheric chemical transport (ACT) model for research and forecasting of joint meteorological, chemical and biological weather. The integrated modelling system is developed by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) in collaboration with several European universities. It is the baseline system in the HIRLAM Chemical Branch and used in several countri… Show more

“…These broadband optical properties were used by HLRADIA, the simplest radiation scheme available in HARMONIE-AROME, employing the approach in Enviro-HIRLAM [4,10]. The impact of the updated aerosol optical properties on the radiative fluxes and temperature tendencies was studied in single-column MUSC experiments.…”

“…Thus, no climatological or other gridded aerosol load data are used. The treatment of aerosol data and IOPs by HLRADIA was renewed in the Enviro-HIRLAM modelling environment using GADS/OPAC data [24,25] and software as suggested in [4]. The aerosol optical properties were derived from GADS/OPAC ME, SSA and ASY and then remapped to the default AOD550 input of 6 aerosol species and spectrally averaged to get the broadband SW and LW values.…”

“…The examples of the tools span from atmospheric clusters to regional air quality, global climate, and Earth System Models (ESMs) and may include cluster models like ACDC (McGrath et al, 2012), boundary layer models like SOSA (Boy et al, 2011) coupled with models simulating both aerosol dynamics and gas-phase chemistry like ADCHAM (Roldin et al, 2015) and MALTE-BOX (Boy et al, 2013), chemical transport models like WRF-Chem (Grell et al 2005), seamless meteorology-chemistry-aerosols integrated model like Enviro-HIRLAM (Baklanov et al, 2017), and Earth System models like EC-EARTH (Hazeleger et al, 2012). Earth System Models are used to assess the impact of Russian and Chinese emissions on the boreal and the Arctic atmosphere between 1750 and 2100.…”
