“…Several studies have indicated that cpe ‐positive strains occur in low numbers in co‐existence with large numbers of cpe ‐negative C. perfringens in the intestines of humans and animals (Miwa et al. 1997; Heikinheimo et al. 2004).…”

“…In the present study, the broiler chicken isolates were obtained from conventionally cultivated samples by picking a couple of colonies from each sample, thus the isolates represented the dominant C. perfringens population in the broiler intestinal samples. In the future, by using a specific method for detection and isolation of cpe ‐positive C. perfringens strains (Heikinheimo et al. 2004), the cpe ‐positive C. perfringens strains could be detected and isolated from the dominating cpe ‐negative C. perfringens population, and the presence of the cpe gene and the type of the isolate could be further confirmed with the multiplex PCR assay.…”

“…Since both CPEnt gene-positive and -negative C. perfringens isolates may be present simultaneously in an individual and the ratio of CPEnt-positive to total C. perfingens strains is presumably low [15], non-enterotoxigenic isolates may have been picked for subcultures resulting in false-negative PCR results. In addition, C. perfringens strains could have lost their CPEnt gene during subculture procedures [31].…”

“…Non-toxigenic strains of C. perfringens can be usually found in the gut flora of healthy individuals in small numbers (up to 10 3 colony forming units [CFU]/g stool) [14]. In the stool of symptomatic patients, ≥ 10 6 spores of C. perfringens per g stool can be detected [14]; the ratio of CPEnt positive to total C. perfringens strains is estimated to be low [15].…”

“…Aunque era de esperar que el porcentaje de cepas toxigénicas fuera bajo, es posible que las cepas hayan correspondido, por azar, a cepas no toxigénicas, porque en una misma muestra puede coexistir un pequeño número de células cpe-positivas con un gran número de células cpe-negativas (Miwa et al 1997, Heikinheimo et al 2004, Heikinheimo et al 2006.…”
