Enucleation and surgical stent as a treatment strategy for a large unicystic ameloblastoma: Case report and review of literature

Abstract: Highlights Ameloblastoma has a locally invasive and aggressive nature and high recurrence rate. A conservative approach and a radical resection approach have been suggested. Radical resection may lead to esthetic, functional, and psychological sequelae. First use of surgical stent with conservative management for ameloblastoma.

“…In the conservative approach, enucleation is included, and in the radical approach, excision and local reconstruction are considered. Its recurrence is a common complication of conservative treatment; although the conservative approach maintains the integrity of the bone with its growth pattern, it is associated with a high possibility of recurrence ranging from 55–90% [ 19 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. To reduce these recurrences, complete bone resection with a safety margin has been considered an adequate option, mainly through marginal or segmental osteotomy for the mandible and partial or total maxillectomy for the maxilla.…”

“…It is complete removal of cystic capsule, without rupture of its lining reducing the possibility of recurrence. [1][2] Here we are presenting a clinical case report of a mandibular multilocular cyst in a male patient that was treated by enucleation followed by fabrication of stent.…”
