Using Wylleman and Lavallee (2004) and Stambulova (2003) models of transition as conceptual frameworks for the current study, we aimed to explore United Kingdom (UK) professional soccer players' (N = 5) experiences going through a youth-to-senior career transition to first team level, and assess the immediate changes that occur during the move.Few studies have assessed this process, and no studies have focused on assessing the changes that may occur between pre and post transition. Data collection lasted 1 month with players interviewed twice, 2 weeks before, and 2 weeks after their transition to the first team. Data were abductively thematically content analyzed. Prior to transition, players reported high motivation to be successful, but also feeling anxious about the transition to senior sport. Posttransition, players felt more confident about their ability to succeed in senior sport and maintained high levels of motivation to succeed. Family, friends, coaches, and teammates provided emotional, technical, and tangible support to the players throughout the transition, but were also sources of stress for athletes moving to senior sport. These findings suggest ways to assist transitioning athletes, such as the use of buddy systems with senior players.

High-performance sport impacts athletes beyond the physical. Coaches and coaching practice are particularly influential in shaping this learning and development. This article examines the learning identified through an inductive content analysis of eight former Olympic athletes' career narratives. Three phases of learning could be identified across the cohort: "Growing into high-performance sport", "Making sense of high-performance sport", and "(Re)shaping high-performance sport". A cultural perspective of learning, in particular the metaphor of "becoming", is employed to interpret the Olympians' learning experiences. The findings of this research indicate that athlete learning is bound by particular highperformance sporting contexts and career phases, yet impacted by the athletes' individual backgrounds and dispositions. Further, data indicate that athletes' personal development reflexively inter-twines with athletic performance and performance enhancement. Implications for coaches are to: (1) involve athletes in co-constructing their sporting cultures and training contexts; and (2) provide possibilities and support for athletes to develop personally.

Professional athletes moving abroad for their career is a novel phenomenon in international human resource management (IHRM). This exploratory article charts the motivations of sports expatriates to move abroad to play, as well as adjustment challenges and sources of support. A survey was conducted with 77 professional athletes in 10 different sports. The main motivations to move abroad were interest to experience life abroad, followed by the search for new challenges. In terms of challenges, different coaching style and communication issues were most often mentioned. Support was mainly informal, through team mates rather than professional providers. Our article contributes to the literature because it is one of the first studies focusing on sports expatriates from an international HR perspective. Our study provides information on a vulnerable group of expatriates; they are young in age and under extreme performance pressure. Sports expatriates need all the support they can get, and yet, little professional support is offered.
