Entropic Analysis of Votes Expressed in Italian Elections between 1948 and 2018

Abstract: In Italy, the elections occur often, indeed almost every year the citizens are involved in a democratic choice for deciding leaders of different administrative entities. Sometimes the citizens are called to vote for filling more than one office in more than one administrative body. This phenomenon has occurred 35 times after 1948; it creates the peculiar condition of having the same sample of people expressing decisions on political bases at the same time. Therefore, the Italian contemporaneous ballots constit… Show more

“…Michaud and Szilva [ 129 ] have fixed issues with the model originally proposed by Fernandez–Garcia et al [ 122 ], mainly, they have redefined how the noise term is handled so that the model would be more mathematically well-posed. Marmani et al [ 130 ] have provided a similar empirical analysis of Italian electoral data and provided an additional perspective from the point of view of Shannon entropy.…”

“…Lower values indicate more self-similarity of the time series (approximately similar to a part of itself), while higher values indicate a less predictable series. An example of entropy in political analysis is the study by Marmani et al [ 28 ], who used entropy and the Gini index to analyze municipal and parliamentary voting in Italy. They found high entropy levels but with variations in some election periods.…”

“…In biology, entropy is used to study the behavior of complex systems, such as the evolution of species while engineering, entropy is used to design efficient systems for storing, transmitting, and processing information. It has been also widely employed in multidisciplinary fields ranging from information sciences, machine learning, social sciences and economics to astrophysical systems, heavy ion collisions, election studies and voter transitions [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8].…”
