Silver nanoparticles (NPs) on glass substrates were obtained by a solid-state thermal dewetting (SSD) process using vacuum-evaporated-silver precursor layers. An exhaustive investigation of the morphological, structural, and surface chemistry properties by systematically controlling the precursor film thickness, annealing temperature, and time was conducted. Thin silver films with thicknesses of 40 and 80 nm were deposited and annealed in air by applying a combined heat-up+constant temperature–time program. Temperatures from 300 to 500 °C and times from 0 to 50 min were assayed. SSD promoted the morphological modification of the films, leading to the Ag NPs having a discrete structure. The size, shape, surface density, and inter-nanoparticle distance of the nanoparticles depended on the initial film thickness, annealing temperature, and time, exhibiting a cubic silver structure with a (111) preferred crystallographic orientation. The prepared NPs were found to be highly enriched in the Ag{111}/Ag{110}/Ag{100} equilibrium facets. SSD not only promotes NP formation but also promotes the partial oxidation from Ag to AgO at the surface level. AgO was detected on the surface around the nanoparticles synthesized at 500 °C. Overall, a broad framework has been established that connects process factors to distinguish resultant Ag NP features in order to develop unique silver nanoparticles for specific applications.

Cost effective inhibition of mild steel corrosion employing eco-friendly materials is a high priority subject for industries these days. Therefore, in this work, a series of N-(benzo[d]thiazole-2-yl)-1-phenylethan-1-imines [N-(benzo[d]thiazole-2-yl)-1-phenylethan-1-imine (BTPEI), N-(benzo[d]thiazole-2-yl)-1-(3-chlorophenyl) ethan-1-imine (BTCPEI), N-(benzo[d]thiazole-2-yl)-1-(m-tolyl) ethan-1-imine (BTTEI), and N-(benzo[d]thiazole-2-ylimino) ethyl) aniline (BTPIA)] for mild steel protection in 1 M HCl were explored by adopting methods like gravimetric analysis, adsorption isotherms, and electrochemical methods, for example, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization. Different spectral characterization methods such as FTIR and 1H NMR were used to confirm the synthesized derivatives. The experimental results affirmed that all of the inhibitors are proven to be very efficient for combating corrosion for mild steel in acidic media. The determined thermodynamic and activation parameters were used to provide a further understanding of the mechanism of inhibitive activity. The computed Gibbs free energy values suggested strong chemical interaction of inhibitors with the mild steel surface, thereby supporting chemisorption. Potentiodynamic polarization data explained the mixed type nature of all of the inhibitors. Impedance measurements point out that protective film deposits on the mild steel in the presence of the inhibitors. Studies like scanning electron microscope (SEM) with electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further supported the adsorption inhibitive mechanism. The theoretical findings such as density functional theory (DFT), Fukui indices, and molecular dynamics (MD) provided good agreement with different experimental techniques.

Electrochemical and Computational Insights on the Application of Expired Metformin Drug as a Novel Inhibitor for the Sweet Corrosion of C1018 Steel

An expired metformin drug (MET) was used as a corrosion inhibitor for C1018 carbon steel in a CO2-saturated 3.5 wt % NaCl + 340 ppm acetic acid solution under static conditions. The inhibitor was evaluated using electrochemical methods complemented with surface analytical measurements and computational modeling. The drug displayed a high inhibition efficiency of ∼90% at 200 ppm. Impedance analyses revealed a rise in the charge transfer resistance at the steel–solution interface upon the addition of the inhibitor. Polarization measurements suggested that MET acted more like a cathodic-type corrosion inhibitor and significantly reduced the corrosion current density. The adsorption of MET on the steel substrate followed the Langmuir isotherm, showing a mixed type of physical and chemical modes of adsorption. The thermodynamic parameters revealed strong and spontaneous adsorption on the steel surface. The surface analysis using SEM supported the inhibitor adsorption on the steel substrate. Based on the DFT simulation, inhibition by MET is mainly achieved by its protonated form, which leads to the formation of a thin film on the steel surface rather than the modification of the work function of the steel surface. The experimental and theoretical estimations of pKa complemented the DFT results, both agreeing that the monoprotonated form of MET is the dominant form in which the inhibitor adsorbs on the steel surface to form a thin film rather than modify the work function of the steel surface.
