One effect of the economic crisis on the business world has been the drastic reduction in staff and this in turn highlights the need for self-employment and the creation of new companies to establish a solid industrial fabric to support the creation of wealth, employment and welfare. In this context, the aim of this research is to confirm a theoretical model based on Expectancy Theory to explain self-employment in terms of an individual's motivation and ability to start a business. Because of the lack of additional information about entrepreneurial motivation, we conducted a field investigation of Spanish self-employed workers who had established a manufacturing company during the last three years. The results confirm the supposition that expectancy, instrumentality and valence enhance entrepreneurial motivation. This study concludes that businesses are created not only by those with the ability and aptitude to do so, but also by those with the motivation.

This paper analyzes the effects of entrepreneurs' personal values and their entrepreneurial attitudes, as forms of intellectual capital, on the innovative behavior of small businesses. The influence of personal values is examined through Schwartz's value theory and entrepreneurial attitudes via assessments associated with risk taking and personal autonomy. A model of structural equations using the Partial Least Squares technique was applied to a database composed of 191 small business owners in Paraguay. The results show that personal values of conservation and self-enhancement in the entrepreneur have a direct negative effect on innovation. It is also noted that entrepreneurial attitudes, such as openness to change and self-transcendence, have a mediating role in the positive impact of values on innovation. The article contributes to the literature by showing that some elements of intellectual capital, such as entrepreneurial attitudes and entrepreneurs' personal values, interact to influence innovation in small businesses.

Resumen Las características personales de los empresarios condicionan el funcionamiento y los resultados de las pequeñas y medianas empresas a nivel microeconómico, determinando junto con otros factores (organizacionales, económicos y del entorno) su calidad emprendedora. A su vez, la calidad emprendedora en un ámbito territorial específico determina la capacidad del tejido empresarial para impulsar el crecimiento y el desarrollo económicos en dicho territorio. Por lo tanto, resulta de gran interés profundizar en el estudio de las características personales de los empresarios de las pymes en un sector como el turístico, que es clave para la economía española y donde la presencia de pymes es abrumadora. Este trabajo presenta resultados empíricos obtenidos a partir de una encuesta dirigida a 1.119 pymes turísticas españolas, de la que se derivan muestras representativas de las tres principales actividades turísticas: hotelería, intermediación turística y restauración. El trabajo proporciona un perfil personal de los pequeños y medianos empresarios turísticos españoles en relación con aspectos como su nivel formativo y experiencia previa, sus motivaciones, actitudes y orientación emprendedora, entre otros aspectos.
