High-growth firmsalso called gazelleshave the potential to create jobs and to drive regional development. Yet, there remains a lack of understanding about how to best support these companies in their growth process. Hence, the types of support offered to these firms are often misdirected and fail to provide relevant support to appropriate types of businesses. This paper focuses on one support policy aimed at support gazelles to cope with their growth challenges, namely intermediary actors, who provide matchmaking, advise and networking activities directed to gazelles. More specifically, this paper aims at identifying what challenges are encountered by gazelles and whether the support provided by intermediary actors is matching the need of support. The empirical focus of the paper is on gazelles within the construction industry and situated in the Swedish municipality Norrköping. Findings indicate that challenges relate to recruitment, interactions with the public sector, lack of support and entrepreneurial personalities/skills. These challenges overwhelm the everyday work of entrepreneurs, who struggle to find solutions, despite the support of intermediaries. Implications for high-growth companies, intermediary actors and policymakers are discussed with the aim of finding a better match between high-growth challenges and intermediary support.

Gazelles create greater share of new jobs in comparison with other businesses operating on the market. These are young businesses of various sizes, but mainly small businesses. They generate a high rate of growth of production within a short time, which is based on the use of innovation, they are also the bearers of innovation. They are characterized by effective use of creativity and human resource capacities. They may be found in all sectors of economy, but to the greatest extent in the services sector and within that sector mainly in business services characterized by high knowledge intensity, high dynamics and continuous growth in employment. Gazelles of business services in the Slovak Republic intensively use all types of innovation. Management ability to optimize innovative processes according to needs of the enterprise seems to be of importance. Human resources and performance is considered to be the most important area of innovation influence. With its innovative activity they act as the accelerator of economy and changes in the thinking and culture of both enterprises, as well as the whole company toward sustainable growth.

This paper is a comparative analysis of the peculiarities of entrepreneurial motives and challenges that exist in emerging economies. The paper also emphasizes the fact that knowing what entrepreneurs are up against would get them prepared and inexorably minimize the effects of the challenges. Research findings show that entrepreneurs set up business ventures basically for various reasons, and individuals become entrepreneurs primarily due to pull, than push factors. 1200 samples were purposively drawn from two African emerging economies. Pre-tested questionnaires were administered among entrepreneurs in the economic hub to both economies. The analysis was done using descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance. The research findings show that a greater proportion of the entrepreneurs in both economies were driven by passion and very few were poverty driven. The results also show that entrepreneurial challenges are typical of every emerging economy but vary in certain cases. Furthermore, the results show that there is a significant difference in the average income level and the number of years in business (F=7.60; p<0.05), whereas in South Africa, there is no significant difference in average income level and the number of years in business (F=1.41; p>0.05). The study concludes that the challenges such as epileptic power supply, lack of finance, and low patronage would continually hamper entrepreneurial activities and inexorably increase the failure rates of entrepreneurship in these economies if the challenges persist.
