International student mobility is increasing and transforming the image of higher education institutions. This study examines the factors that motivate international students in choosing a destination country. The aspects of the institution selection were examined using a non-parametric test, factor analysis and principal component analysis based on a sample of 270 people. Relying on the results of the research conducted in Hungary, the paper examines the factors influencing the selection of the destination country and further research examining the elements effecting the selection of the final host institution. Based on these results, the study disputes that economic and social impulses within the country of origin serve to “push” students abroad. However, the decision of which destination country to choose depends on several “pull” factors. The study features the usefulness of the quality of human environment, geographic proximity, tuition and living costs, scholarship opportunities, job opportunities after graduation, and the reputation of the destination country or institution, as well as the impact of linguistic proximity on student flow. The present empirical research reveals the close relationships between some pull factors, such as favourable geographical location, institutional support, the quality of the human environment, the expected balanced work environment after graduation, and the country of origin of international students. The results of the factor analysis confirm the underlying structure of the learning variables used in this research and provide empirical support for its application in future studies of international students' higher education study experiences.

PurposeThis study intends to conceptually and technically examine the literature on work integrated learning (WIL) through a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis. The present study addresses eight distinct research questions: (1) descriptive features of the extracted literature on WIL, (2) publications trends and thematic evolution in the field of WIL, (3) the most relevant and high-impact sources on WIL, (4) the most global cited articles on WIL, (5) the most relevant and high-impact authors on WIL, (6) the most relevant countries on WIL, (7) outcomes of Bradford’s Law of Scattering and Lotka’s Law of Scientific Productivity and (8) trending research avenues for future studies in the field of WIL.Design/methodology/approachThe present study employed systematic literature review (SLR) and bibliometric analysis mapping techniques to analyze 1,295 articles extracted from the Scopus database. The analysis utilized Biblioshiny software and VOSviewer software as the primary tools.FindingsThe findings reveal that WIL constitutes a steadily expanding subject discipline, showcasing a notable 23.28% annual growth in scientific production spanning from 2002 to 2023 (July). Australia, South Africa and Canada emerged as the most productive countries within the field of WIL, as evidenced by their cumulative scientific production. The thematic map of keyword analysis suggests several burgeoning avenues for future researchers in the WIL domain, including education, reflective practices, curriculum, employability skills, international students, learning and self-efficacy.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the WIL discourse by providing a comprehensive literature review. The present study’s findings hold significance for graduates, universities, employers, the higher education industry, policymakers, regulators and the broader community.

The challenges imposed by climate change and the limited nature of resources generate paradigm shifts at the level of economic, social, and environmental policies and strategies. Promoting the principles of sustainable development and the circular economy is a priority worldwide. Thus, the motivation of this research is to explore the European countries’ path toward sustainable development by analysing the relationship between green environment, economic growth, and circular economy issues. In order to explore this relationship in the case of European countries, the analysis takes into consideration specific variables: final energy consumption, GDP, capital gross fixed capital formation, greenhouse gas emissions, SOx emissions, NOx emissions, and generation of municipal waste per capita. This study is focused on the period 2009–2020 for 31 European countries, with data being provided by Eurostat and World Bank databases. The panel data analysis was used in order to examine the relationship between a green environment, economic growth and a circular economy. The results of the study suggest that gross fixed capital formation and total greenhouse gas emissions lead to decreasing generation of municipal waste; instead, final energy consumption, GDP, SOx emissions and NOx emissions generate an increase in the generation of municipal waste. The novelty of our paper consists of associating green environment, economic growth, and circular economy in the case of European countries, the results allowing the proposal of economic policy measures to favor the green transition process considering the potential of the circular economy.
