Cet article examine l’impact des seuils sociaux sur l’intention de croissance et les comportements des dirigeants de PME français. Pour les organisations patronales, ces seuils, notamment celui des 50, sont un frein à l’intention de croître des dirigeants et expliquent, en grande partie, le déficit du nombre d’entreprises de taille intermédiaire (ETI) sur le territoire. La problématique des effets de seuils et de son incidence sur la croissance n’a, jusqu’à présent, pas constitué un objet de recherche en soi. Une étude qualitative est menée pour analyser en profondeur l’impact du seuil des 50 salariés sur les intentions et comportements des dirigeants. Dans un premier temps descriptif, les intentions et comportements adoptés et projetés face aux seuils sont identifiés. Puis, dans une logique analytique, les facteurs inhibant et facilitant le franchissement des seuils sont examinés.This article takes a look at the impact of social thresholds on the growth ambition and behaviour of French SME entrepreneurs. Employer organisations believe that these thresholds, in particular that of the 50 employees, are a hindrance to the entrepreneurs’ growth ambition and largely explain the shortage of Mid-Cap companies on the French territory. So far, the issue of threshold effects and their impact on growth have not as yet been a focus of research. A qualitative study is underway to scrutinise the impact of the 50-employee threshold on the entrepreneurs’ intentions and behaviour. The initial description stage focuses on identifying the intentions and types of behaviour adopted and anticipated with regard to the thresholds. Subsequently, as part of an analytical approach, the factors inhibiting and facilitating the crossing of thresholds will be examined.El presente artículo analiza el impacto de los umbrales aplicables a las empresas en la intención de crecimiento y los comportamientos de los dirigentes de PyME en Francia. Para las organizaciones patronales, dichos umbrales, en particular el de los 50 empleados, constituyen un freno a la intención de crecimiento de los dirigentes y explican en gran medida el déficit de empresas de tamaño medio en el territorio. Hasta ahora, la cuestión de los efectos de los umbrales y su incidencia en el crecimiento nunca había constituido un objeto de estudio en sí misma. Se ha desarrollado un análisis cualitativo con el fin de estudiar el impacto del umbral de los 50 empleados en las intenciones y comportamientos de los dirigentes. En un primer momento, se ha adoptado un enfoque descriptivo que permite identificar las intenciones y comportamientos mostrados y proyectados frente a los umbrales. A continuación, con una lógica analítica, se han examinado los factores que inhiben y facilitan la superación de esos umbrales
