Entomotourism: The Allure of the Arthropod

Abstract: Wildlife tourism is often associated with charismatic megafauna in the public imagination (e.g., safaris, whale watching, bear viewing). Entomotourism (insect-focused tourism) typically is not on the radar, but each year thousands of peoples visit monarch butterfly congregations and glow worm caves, and participate in guided firefly outings. Elsewhere, millions of peoples visit butterfly pavilions, insectariums, and bee museums. Calculations of visitation numbers aside, researchers in tourism studies have larg… Show more

“…These results imply that conservation campaigns built around species people encounter may build lifelong awareness, concern, and actions towards conservation. and overwintering sites now draw thousands of ecotourists each year (Lemelin & Jaramillo-López, 2019;Lemelin, Boileu, & Russell, 2019). Thanks to school programs and large-scale monitoring projects, public awareness of monarchs has grown over generations who are interacting with monarchs "in the wild" (Young-Isebrand et al 2015;…”

“…The researchers, who studied the distribution and the occurrence of fireflies in the state of Perak, have concentrated solely on fireflies discovered in Kampung Dew, Perak. Pteroptyx fireflies, according to Mahadimenakbar et al (2009), have the potential as ecotourism goods and contribute to wildlife tourism called entomotourism (Lemelin et al, 2019). Figure 1 shows the current study area for this field survey in Kuala Sepetang, Perak, compared to the previous study area in Kampung Dew, Perak.…”

“…And while awe is certainly associated with vastness, its other aspects unrelated to physical size are often marginalised. Even science communication and experiences which deal with physically small subject matter, such as insects, tend to do so in the context of physical vastness, such as large congregations of butterflies or glow worms [Lemelin, Boileau & Russell, 2019]. Luna and Bering [2020] challenge this idea of awe as an innate attribute independent of cultural context.…”
