Entomopathogenic fungi in cornfields and their potential to manage larval western corn rootworm Diabrotica virgifera virgifera

Abstract: Entomopathogenic ascomycete fungi are ubiquitous in soil and on phylloplanes, and are important natural enemies of many soil-borne arthropods including larval western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, which is a major pest of corn. We measured the prevalence of Beauveria bassiana andMetarhizium anisopliae sensu lato in ten cornfields in Iowa, USA by baiting with larval insects. B. bassianaand M. anisopliae s.l. were present in 60% ± 6.3% and 55% ± 6.4% of soil samples, respectively. Subsequent lab… Show more

“…Protection from UV radiation and numerous adverse biotic and abiotic influences have made soil an excellent environmental reservoir for EPF (Keller and Zimmermann 1989). Therefore, studying soils for EPF diversity has been a common practice (Meyling and Eilenberg 2006, Quesada-Moraga et al 2007, Rudeen et al 2013, Muñiz-Reyes et al 2014, Clifton et al 2015.…”

“…Entomopathogenic fungi are regarded as promising control agents of many important pests in Europe and worldwide (Rudeen et al 2013;Reddy et al 2014;Wanga and Feng 2014). However, the practical application of entomopathogenic fungi in plant protection is rather limited.…”
