Entomological indices of malaria transmission in Chikhwawa district, Southern Malawi

Abstract: BackgroundAlthough malaria is highly prevalent throughout Malawi, little is known of its transmission dynamics. This paper describes the seasonal activity of the different vectors, human biting indices, sporozoite rates and the entomological inoculation rate in a low-lying rural area in southern Malawi.MethodsVectors were sampled over 52 weeks from January 2002 to January 2003, by pyrethrum knockdown catch in two villages in Chikhwawa district, in the Lower Shire Valley.ResultsIn total, 7,717 anophelines were … Show more

“…funestus s.s. and An. arabiensis in peri-urban areas, provides partial evidence of potential local malaria transmission in areas surrounding Blantyre city as both species are known malaria vectors in Malawi [23]. Further research is needed though in Blantyre city to better characterize malaria vector abundance, feeding behaviour and breeding sites, as these represent factors important to transmission within the city limits.…”

“…Knockdown pyrethrum spray catches (PSCs) are effective for collecting fed females resting indoors [6] and are commonly conducted throughout Africa [51,52]. Due to issues of insecticide persistence inside houses, however, PSCs were not incorporated into the Latin Square study design.…”

“…funestus increases toward the end of the wet season and dominates in the dry season. 39,40 The increases in An. gambiae mosquitoes are likely due to a wide range of temporary sunlit breeding habitats found throughout Nchelenge District such as animal footprints, puddles, and ground depressions formed due to heavy rains during the wet season.…”

“…gambiae were found to be highly anthropophilic, but surprisingly a few mixed human/goat and goat only blood meals were identified in both vectors, which has been infrequently reported. 40,[44][45][46] In Nchelenge District, goats are occasionally kept indoors at night and may serve as an incidental host to indoor foraging An. funestus and An.…”
