However, I have had lots of help and support from a number of people who all have contributed to also make this process stimulating and enjoyable. First, I should mention Robin Cooper and Christine Howes who have tirelessly read and commented on various parts and versions of this book, not to mention helping me develop many of the ideas presented here i… Show more

“…This approach is particularly useful in the context of a theory based on communicative events (Cooper 2019). We suggest developing this account by linking inferences and personae to topoi -principles of reasoning warranting inferences in interaction (Kennedy 2007;Ducrot 1988;Breitholtz 2020). “…which underpin inferences and associations made by interlocutors. Breitholtz (2020) discusses the link between such resources and the different types of rhetorical relations in discourse theories like Segmented Discourse Representation Theory (SDRT; Asher and Lascarides, 2003) and neo-Gricean pragmatic theories such as Relevance Theory (Wilson and Sperber, 2004). Breitholtz and Maraev (2019) suggest analysing humorous interactions in terms of enthymemes, arguments where the conclusion does not follow by necessity, usually because one or more premises are not explicit in the discourse.…”

“…These are not intended to be complete formal representations, rather as a convenient and clear way of representing our intuitions about topoi and enthymemes. More complete formal representations are shown in Breitholtz (2020). The topos that if someone is at home they can receive a delivery is acceptable to most people.…”
