Entertainment Architecture: Constructing a framework for the creation of an emerging transmedia form

Abstract: The topic of this research is a novel entertainment form currently emerging from the youngest human communication technology, the Internet. This form, products based on it, and the conceptual framework describing it are all referred to as Entertainment Architecture ('entarch,' for short). Entarch is classified as Internet-native transmedia entertainment -it fully utilises the unique communicative characteristics of the Internet and is not based on just one medium. “…Play is inseparable from storytelling (Dena 2009) and Gunn and Wendig's political communications were inextricably linked to their site of social media play, and therefore their fictional storyworlds and roles as custodians, by association. While they may have believed that their communications were in line with the ethos of their creative works, there is no guarantee that paratextual elements of communication will be received by audiences in the manner in which they were intended (Gray, 2010;Konzal, 2011). Clearly some fans did not find their words to be consistent with the values of their commercial storyworlds.…”

“…The new backdrop has favored the emergence of a new form of storytelling, the so-called transmedia storytelling (TS). This concept and its implementation have generated particular interest among audiovisual media professionals and researchers (Konzal, 2011). Scientists have not reached an agreement about the definition of the new term, but some definitions and approaches have attempted to establish its most important features: TS is a particular narrative structure that expands through both different languages (verbal, iconic, etc.)…”

“…Up until now, the study and analysis of the application of transmedia storytelling has referred predominantly to fictional universes (Belsunces, 2011; Clarke, 2012; Costa-Sánchez, 2014; Dena, 2010; Jenkins, 2006, 2010; Konzal, 2011; Rodríguez et al, 2014; Scolari, 2013b; Stein and Busse, 2012; Velikovsky, 2012). The theoretical and practical study of the articulation of transmedia narratives in non-fictional universes has received reduced and recent attention, limited almost exclusively to the documentary field (Gifreu-Castells, 2014; O’Flynn, 2012; Pardo, 2011; Roos, 2012; Scott-Stevenson, 2012).…”
