Enteroviruses in Tunisia: virological surveillance over 12 years (1992–2003)

Abstract: This report is an overview of enterovirus epidemiology in Tunisia during a 12-year period from 1992 to 2003. A total of 4700 clinical samples were collected as part of the national poliovirus surveillance programme and the routine diagnostic programme for aseptic meningitis. Enterovirus detection was performed by isolation on cell culture according to World Health Organization recommended protocols. Serotype identification was performed by seroneutralization of the cytopathic effect using pools of specific ant… Show more

“…In addition, a link between clinical syndromes and genotypes was in accordance with previous studies ( 1 , 2 , 4 6 , 31 ); aseptic meningitis by E30, E6, and CB5; HFMD by CA16; and HFMD with neurologic complications by EV71. In this study, EV71 was the most frequent type of EV detected during 1999–2011 in South Korea.…”

“…EV infections have been known to increase in summer and early autumn in countries in temperate climates ( 1 , 2 , 13 ). As expected in a temperate climate, our surveillance data revealed a seasonal pattern of distribution, with transmission peaking in the summer and decreasing in the period from autumn to spring.…”

“…This result is close to the findings reported in another study conducted in Pakistan, Nigeria, Malaysia and Tunisia, where NPEV were isolated from 8.5%, 7.6%, 6.5% and 5.3% of AFP cases, respectively. 17,18,19,20 However, the frequency of NPEV isolation in our study was much lower than reported in other countries such as Egypt (17.6%) and Ghana (20%). 21,14 The rates under 10% can reflect a low circulation of NPEV in the country.…”

“…Surprisingly, the current study revealed that infections by two other CVBs, CVB3 and CVB6, were associated with a decreased risk of b-cell autoimmunity. A possible protective effect of CVB3 has actually been reported in a smaller study where patients with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes were found to be less frequently positive for neutralizing antibodies against this serotype than control subjects (26). This phenomenon could be explained by immunological cross-protection induced by CVB3 and CVB6 against the diabetogenic effect of CVB1.…”
