Enterovirus inhibiting activities of two lupane triterpenoids and anthraquinones from senna siamea stem bark against three serotypes of echovirus

Abstract: Echovirus 7, 13 and 19 are part of the diseases-causing enteroviruses identified in Nigeria. Presently, no treatment modality is clinically available against these enteric viruses. Herein, we investigated the ability of two anthraquinones (physcion and chrysophanol) and two lupane triterpenoids (betulinic acid and lupeol), isolated from the stem bark of Senna siamea, to reduce the viral-induced cytopathic effect on rhabdomyosarcoma cells using MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5diphenyltetrazolium bromide) c… Show more

“…Emodin has been shown to have potent inhibitory activities against Coxsackie virus (CVB 5 ) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) [16]. Another anthraquinone, physcion, isolated from Senna siamea, has been shown to possess anti-enteroviral activities [17]. Rhein (an anthraquinone) has been reported to demonstrate anti-influenza A virus activity through regulating oxidative stress and various signaling pathways like MAP-kinase (mitogen activated protein kinase) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-B) pathways [18].…”

“…The stems of Senna plant species are identified with physcion, chrysophanol, betulinic acid, lupeol, and emodin [130,131]. In other studies, Lü et al [132][133][134] [133], and 1,8,10-trihydroxyl-1-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-3-methyl-10-C (S)-β-Dglucopyranosyl-anthrone-9 [134] from stem.…”
