Enterococcus faecium PNC01 isolated from the intestinal mucosa of chicken as an alternative for antibiotics to reduce feed conversion rate in broiler chickens

Abstract: Background The development and utilization of probiotics had many environmental benefits for replacing antibiotics in animal production. Bacteria in the intestinal mucosa have better adhesion to the host intestinal epithelial cells compared to bacteria in the intestinal contents. In this study, lactic acid bacteria were isolated from the intestinal mucosa of broiler chickens and investigated as the substitution to antibiotic in broiler production. Results … Show more

“…Antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) are still widely used to improve gut health and growth performance in the global poultry industry, while many countries are trying to restrict the use of AGP in poultry feed [ 1 ]. The continuous and excessive use of AGP has been thought to decrease the efficacy of AGP and threaten public health by spreading antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes in the poultry industry [ 2 ].…”

“…faecium is known as a gut commensal, but also as an opportunistic pathogen in humans and animals [60,61]. Moreover, specific isolates of E. faecium are applied as probiotics In broilers [62,63]. The distinction between these groups lies in differences in their genetic makeup [64,65].…”

“…The total number of bacteria in every dilution of ileum was calculated, and the 4359 M. EYVAZZADEH ARDABILI, A. NOBAKHT, A.R. SAFAMEHR, Y. MEHMANNAVAZ, A. ZANEBURE mean of them as the total number of bacteria in digestive content per gram was reported in every treatment repetition (He et al, 2021).…”
