Abstract-Phase noise is one of the major impairments affecting severely performance of millimeter-wave systems. This paper addresses the problem of link adaption for coherent and non-coherent phase modulated signals subject to Gaussian and Wiener phase noise. We first derive closed-form approximations of the bit error rate. Then, in contrast to usual link adaptation techniques, we propose a simple scheme exploiting estimations of not only the signal-to-noise ratio but also of the phase noise variance, which is essential to achieve reliable communications.

Abstract-To meet the increasing capacity demands of future mobile networks, dense deployment of radio access nodes in combination with partly centralized processing by means of a cloudbased architecture is a promising option. In such an architecture, the design and optimization of the backhaul plays a crucial role. In this paper, we review different backhaul technologies available and discuss their characteristics for use in cloud-based networks. We point out how a heterogeneous backhaul network and a flexible centralization enables the proposed architecture and give an outlook on how a joint design of access and backhaul can help in meeting the increased demands.

Sequential decoding can achieve a very low computational complexity and short decoding delay when the signalto-noise ratio (SNR) is relatively high. In this article, a low-complexity high-throughput decoding architecture based on a sequential decoding algorithm is proposed for convolutional codes. Parallel Fano decoders are scheduled to the codewords in parallel input buffers according to buffer occupancy, so that the processing capabilities of the Fano decoders can be fully utilized, resulting in high decoding throughput. A discrete time Markov chain (DTMC) model is proposed to analyze the decoding architecture. The relationship between the input data rate, the clock speed of the decoder and the input buffer size can be easily established via the DTMC model. Different scheduling schemes and decoding modes are proposed and compared. The novel high-throughput decoding architecture is shown to incur 3-10% of the computational complexity of Viterbi decoding at a relatively high SNR.
