Entamoeba Histolytica: Updates in Clinical Manifestation, Pathogenesis, and Vaccine Development

Abstract: Entamoeba histolytica is the responsible parasite of amoebiasis and remains one of the top three parasitic causes of mortality worldwide. With increased travel and emigration to developed countries, infection is becoming more common in nonendemic areas. Although the majority of individuals infected with E. histolytica remain asymptomatic, some present with amoebic colitis and disseminated disease. As more is learned about its pathogenesis and the host's immune response, the potential for developing a vaccine h… Show more

“…Following excystation, the trophozoites migrates to the gastrointestinal tract where they can either colonise the gut asymptomatically, accounting for almost 90% of all infections or cause lesions and intestinal symptoms including bloody diarrhoea. It is hypothesized that the host's genetic susceptibility, age, immune condition, and the composition of the individual's gut microbiota contribute and can be used as a prediction to the manifestation and severity of the disease (Kantor et al, ).…”

“…People of all ages in developing countries are at risk of amoebiasis infection although prevalence among the ages varies greatly. 1,24 The age distribution was not statistically significant (P = 0.065) in this evaluation and it was as well considered as a determinant of E. histolytica infections. It means that the observed infections were not absolutely correlated with the age.…”

“…Therefore, the literature largely suggests that most infections by E. histolytica occur in developing countries, and those from developed countries that are infected are often returning travelers or immigrants from endemic areas [44]. The burden of disease in developing nations like SLK is primarily due to low SES, inadequate sanitation, and unhygienic practices [13,45]. In these areas, symptomatic E. histolytica infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, with deaths largely being attributed to complications of infection, such as extra-intestinal manifestations (i.e., ALA) [46].…”

“…Relative to other enteropathogens, E. histolytica has a simple life-cycle. Infection begins when humans, the solitary natural hosts, ingest quadrinucleated cysts found in fecally contaminated water or food [45,49]. It can also occur through swimming in contaminated bodies of water, exposure in endemic areas, and also through person-to-person contact [50,51].…”
