The research aimed to demonstrate a broader context in the assessment of patient safety culture and its subsequent application to the selected sample of nurses. Foreign research shows that there is a relationship between the evaluation of particular patient safety culture dimensions and socio-demographic data. It was found that between the dependent (overall perception of patient safety and frequency of events reported) and independent variables of patient safety culture dimensions it is possible to ratify the statistically significant relationship. To reveal the predicted context, the standardized questionnaire of Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) was used and also validated in the Czech language. 207 respondents participated in the research study. The whole questionnaire was evaluated for reliability using Cronbach α with a score of 0.877. The composite score required to determine the particular dimensions was first calculated using AHRQ's methodological procedures. Within our research, we have demonstrated by computed dimensions the correlation between socio-demographic data (i.e., length of the practice in the hospital, length of practice in the current hospital work area/unit and length of practice in the current profession or specialist field) and some dimensions of patient safety culture. The results showed that, in proportion to the length of practice, the level in some dimensions also increased. Through the multidimensional linear regression it was confirmed that dependent variables in dimensions of patient safety culture (overall perception of patient safety and frequency of events reported) are significantly associated with other independent variables of dimensions. The quality of the model used was assessed by determination coefficient, which confirmed this relationship as causative. The results are beneficial to the hospital management from the perspective of targeted activities leading to the improvement of overall perception of patient safety and the frequency of events reported.

The aim of this research was to carry out an analysis of falls of hospitalized patients in 2017. They occurred at 16 selected wards in 4 hospitals in South Bohemia. The falls of hospitalized patients are the most frequent negative events in hospitals. Materials and methods: The data regarding falls in hospitals were coded and databased by authorized employees in "Monitoring of the risk factors of falls and their analysis". They were later statistically analysed using the SASD programme. A total of 280 falls were analysed. Results: Most falls occurred at subsequent care wards-48.9%. 44.3% of falls occurred at internal wards and 6.8% at surgical wards. Almost half (46.5%) concerned patients who had been hospitalized for 1 to 7 days. The average age of the patients who had fallen was 76.9 years. Most falls occurred in patients' rooms-78.0% and, in 93.3% of the cases, a medical worker was not present when the fall occurred. In the last 12 months, more than one third of patients have experienced a fall (39.8%). The riskiest period of the day was between 22:00 and 5:59 (35.8% of falls). Most frequently (31.6%), a patient fell off their bed. 41.8% of patients were not injured. The most frequent internal cause was imbalance or dizziness (57.1%) and 34.4 % suffered from confusion. Conclusions: Considering the above-mentioned results, we recommend a change in the control system and interventions using IT technologies and systems.

Aim: To analyze the psychometric properties of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPS) in internal care units at a specific teaching hospital in the Czech Republic. Design: The paper has the character of a cross-sectional validation study. Methods: The study was conducted between November 2015 and January 2016. The convenience sample consisted of 207 registered nurses working in internal care units at a specific faculty hospital in the Czech Republic. Analysis of the psychometric properties of the HSOPS was conducted using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and reliability testing. Results: Acceptable psychometric properties of the HSOPS were verified in our study. We confirmed 12 components of the HSOPS, the same number stated in the original version from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The reliability of the instrument was evaluated using the Cronbach alpha coefficient, and is considered acceptable. Conclusion: These findings can help healthcare institutions to raise awareness of patient safety culture and to gain a comprehensive overview of the individual dimensions of patient safety culture. In the future, the instrument could help to compare the components of patient safety culture, not only at a national but also at an international level.
