Ensemble Forecasts of Air Quality in Eastern China – Part 2. Evaluation of the MarcoPolo-Panda Prediction System, Version 1

Abstract: Abstract. An operational multi-model forecasting system for air quality has been developed to provide air quality services for urban areas of China. The initial forecasting system included seven state-of-the-art computational models developed and executed in Europe and China (CHIMERE, IFS, EMEP MSC-W, WRF-Chem-MPIM, WRF-Chem-SMS, LOTOS-EUROS and SILAMtest). Several other models joined the prediction system recently, but are not considered in the present analysis. In addition to the individual models, a simple … Show more

“…The MACCity land-based emissions are used together with the Ship Traffic Emission Assessment Model (STEAM). The simulations include sea salt emissions as in Sofiev et al (2011), biogenic VOC emissions as in Poupkou et al (2010), wild land fire emissions as in Soares et al (2015), and desert dust.…”

“…4 briefly discusses the performance of the whole system and of the contributing models. A second paper (Petersen et al, 2018) discusses in more detail the performance of the forecast system including the representativeness of the modelobservation discrepancies, specifically in urban areas. Approaches to improve the performance of the system are presented in Sect.…”

“…model is regulated by processes of chemical reactions, diffusion, drag, dry and wet depositions, emissions and advection. The model has been used in various studies simulating trace gas and aerosol concentrations (Timmermans et al, 2017;Petersen et al, 2019;Kociok et al, 2018). The model is used for daily operational air quality forecasts over Europe (Marécal et al, 2015), the Netherlands (Hendriks et al, 2013), and China (Brasseur et al, 2019).…”
