Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and treatment includes various combinations of surgery, chemotherapy, and/or hormone therapy. The multimodal treatment of breast cancer improves survival outcomes, but it also contributes to a prolonged period of medical intervention with associated physical and emotional consequences. However, we know less about the specific clinical experiences of African American (AA) women during treatment for breast cancer and in survivorship. The studies that have addressed the issue of breast cancer in AA women have focused primarily on early detection and epidemiological variables such a screening, mortality and staging at diagnosis. In our study, in-depth semi-structured phone interviews were conducted to explore the clinical experiences, concerns and needs of AA women who had survived breast cancer. The AA women reported that their physicians did not provide adequate disease and treatment information; did not discuss clinical trials with them; and did not offer access to support services.

Advancing the clinical trial research process to improve cancer treatment necessitates helping people with cancer identify and enroll in studies, and researchers are using the power of the Internet to facilitate this process. This study used a content analysis of online cancer clinical trials search tools to understand what people with cancer might encounter. The content analysis revealed that clinical trial search tools were easy to identify using a popular search engine, but their functionality and content varied greatly. Most required that users be fairly knowledgeable about their medical condition and sophisticated in their web navigation skills. The ability to search by a specific health condition or type of cancer was the most common search strategy. The more complex tools required that users input detailed information about their personal medical history and have knowledge of specific clinical trial terminology. Search tools, however, only occasionally advised users to consult their doctors regarding clinical trials decision-making. This, along with the complexity of the tools suggests that online search tools may not adequately facilitate the clinical trials recruitment process. Findings from this analysis can be used as a framework from which to systematically examine actual consumer experience with online clinical trials search tools.

In this study, the action of water mists on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) in a confined space under different external radiant heat fluxes was studied. Water mist was generated by a downward‐directed single pressure nozzle. Physical characteristics of the water mist were measured by laser doppler velocimetry and the adaptive phase doppler velocimetry system. The heat release rate, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide concentrations, and other important parameters of the interaction under various experimental conditions were measured with cone calorimeter. To explain experimental results, the chemical suppression mechanisms of water mist extinguishing PMMA and PVC flames are investigated from literatures, and the corresponding proposed chemical reactions with water mist are presented. The investigation shows that aromatic compounds are formed by light hydrocarbon products with water mist for PMMA flame. Otherwise, for PVC flame, the decrease of temperature with water mist prevents aromatic compounds from oxidation and degradation. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 1130–1139, 2006
