Sugarcane is the most produced agricultural commodity in tropical and subtropical regions, where it is primarily used for the production of sugar and ethanol. The latter is mostly used to produce alcoholic beverages as well as low carbon biofuel. Despite well-established production chains, their respective residues and by-products present unexploited potentials for further product portfolio diversification. These fully or partially untapped product streams are a) sugarcane trash or straw that usually remain on the fields after mechanized harvest, b) ashes derived from bagasse combustion in cogeneration plants, c) filter cake from clarification of the sugarcane juice, d) vinasse which is the liquid residue after distillation of ethanol, and e) biogenic CO2 emitted during bagasse combustion and ethanol fermentation. The development of innovative cascading processes using these residual biomass fractions could significantly reduce final disposal costs, improve the energy output, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and extend the product portfolio of sugarcane mills. This study reviews not only the state-of-the-art sugarcane biorefinery concepts, but also proposes innovative ways for further valorizing residual biomass. This study is therefore structured in four main areas, namely: i) Cascading use of organic residues for carboxylates, bioplastic, and bio-fertilizer production, ii) recovery of unexploited organic residues via anaerobic digestion to produce biogas, iii) valorization of biogenic CO2 sources, and iv) recovery of silicon from bagasse ashes.

Sugarcane vinasse is an industrial liquid waste generated in great amounts in Brazilian ethanol industries. Nowadays its main use occurs at sugarcane crops, where vinasse is applied as a nutrient source for fertirrigation. However, continued use of vinasse in soil can cause several environmental impacts. So, aiming to provide a more environmentally friendly destination to the effluent, the goal of this work was to investigate the acidogenesis using a synthetic vinasse as substrate, focusing on the effects of initial pH and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) on short chain organic acids (SCOAs) concentrations. Synthetic vinasse was prepared at laboratory taking some real sugarcane vinasse composition given in previous works as references. So, major contribution presented here is the investigation on obtaining high added-value SCOAs from a simulated effluent. Cattle manure sludge was utilized as inoculum to promote the conversion of carbohydrate (sucrose, Suc) in synthetic vinasse into SCOAs in batch reactors during a total incubation time of 72 h. Acidogenesis profiles have shown that concentration of lactic acid (HLa) was prevailing among all metabolites, indicating that process followed through an essentially lactic route. Furthermore, considerable concentrations of propionic, acetic and isobutyric acids were also verified at some specific operation times, while solventogenesis was not detected at all. The greatest peak of lactate content was 4.96 g HLa L-1, observed under initial pH 6.0 and 25 g COD L-1, at 16 h. Maximum of lactate productivity was 332.10 g HLa L-1 h-1 at 8 h, associated to a yield of 189.14 g HLa (g Suc)-1, under initial pH 7.5 and 20 g COD L-1.

Depending on the purpose and use, bioprocesses are carried out in order to reduce, maintain or increase the molar O/C ratio of biomass as the initial substrate. Cascade use considers the holistic and efficient use of biomass. In the current debate of biomass use, however, one may admit that an efficient use of biomass can further be based on the maintenance of initially present molar O/C ratio and functionality. In this regard, what compound should be formed that possesses highest functionality and similar molar O/C ratio as the substrate? How much energy should be spent on bioprocesses for the conversion of biomass under aerobic or anaerobic conditions? This study discusses and contributes to the efficiency assessment of aerobic and anaerobic bioprocesses based on chemical functionality and molar O/C ratio and their scale-depended energy need for creating appropriate environmental conditions for biological agents.
