Enormous Yield of Photoelectrons from Small Particles

Abstract: A new ac bridge technique allows detailed photoelectric studies on very small particles suspended in gases. The photoelectric yield F near threshold 4 still follows the Fowler-Nordheim law F=c{h&-4); yet. c is generally much larger compared to surfaces of 2. 0 extended solids. For Ag particles of radius 20 A in an airlike mixture of N2 and 02, c 100cp where co applies to a macroscopic Ag surface in the same environment. “…Here φ 1/2 is the corresponding electron affinity/workfunction (photodetachment or photoionization) and C is a material constant which we set in our calculation to 0.01 (Schmidt-Ott et al, 1980). In our ionospheric model we use the altitude-dependent MSP size distribution from Megner et al (2006) (see Fig.…”

“…The spectroscopy and the relaxation dynamics of vibrational and electronic excitations of molecules and atoms adsorbed on metal surfaces have received a great deal of attention lately since they are involved in many surface processes such as surface photochemistry -4 , surface photoemission 5 , surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), 6°7 and photolumin.scence. 8 -1 0 In the present article we examine molecular fluorescence and photochemistry in the presence of a surface.…”

“…For particles, the plasma resonance of conduction electrons gives rise to an absorption peak, which shifts towards longer wavelengths for increasing packing density. [1], infrared absorption [2,3] and photo electron emission [4][5][6][7]. The resistivity of small indium particles increases by six orders of magnitude when the particle size is reduced from 1 pm to 10 nm [8,9].…”
