Enolase is present in the cell wall ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae

Abstract: Non-covalently attached or soluble cell wall proteins of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were extracted using a high pH/2-mercaptoethanol procedure and were separated for peptide sequencing using 2D-PAGE. A partial N-terminal sequence of a major protein spot was obtained and showed high identity with enolase gene products. Western blotting with an anti-enolase antibody confirmed that enolase was present in the cell wall extract. Biotinylation of cells prior to protein extraction with a membrane impermeable biotinylat… Show more

“…In our study, 90.31% of the xylem sap proteins were secreted proteins, which was composed of 56.98% classical peptides and 33.33% non-classical peptides; 9.69% were non-secreted proteins, e.g., lactoylglutathione lyase (glyoxalase I) (an enolase). Similarly, enolase has been secreted to the cell wall or extracellular space via immunolocalization even though it lacked a signal peptide 30 . Furthermore, glyoxalase 1 has been identified in the cell wall proteome of the maize primary root elongation zone 31 and in a cell wall proteomics study of mature alfalfa stems 32 .…”

“…In addition, it is important to note that a number of proteins identified in this study are homologous to known non-classical secreted proteins in other organisms, including bacteria, yeast, and mammals for which experimental evidence exists. Examples are annexin, enolase and elongation factor ( Edwards et al, 1999 ; Marcilla et al, 2012 ; Marques et al, 1998 ). One such protein, elongation factor 1α that lacks a signal peptide was isolated from tobacco and has been shown to localize to the cell wall by immunogold localization ( Zhu et al, 1994 ).…”

“…(61) Studies with other microbes, including fungi, have found metabolic proteins outside of the cytosol, including phosphoglycerate kinase (Pgk1) and enolase (Eno1). 59,6264 In addition to a role in glycolysis, enolases from Pneumocystis and Leishmania have been shown to bind host plasminogen. 65,66 …”
