Enolase antigen, mannan antigen, Cand-Tec antigen, and beta-glucan in patients with candidemia

Abstract: We compared the specificities and sensitivities of four tests used for the serodiagnosis of candidemia in 39 patients with candidemia, including 10 patients with superficial Candida colonization, 10 patients with deep mycosis, and 20 healthy subjects. The results obtained by the dot immunoblotting assay for detecting the enolase antigen (48 kDa) were compared with those of assays for detecting mannan antigen, heat-labile antigen (a threshold titer of four times), and ␤-glucan (>60 pg/ml). Enolase antigen was d… Show more

“…False positive results have been described in the presence of rheumatoid factor and in patients with impaired renal function. [145][146][147][148][149][150] The monoclonal antibody EB-CA1 binds to mannan-epitopes of different human-pathogenic Candida species. It is commercially available as latex-agglutination (Pastorex-Candida; BioRad, BioRad Laboratories GmbH, Munich, Germany) or as a Sandwich-ELISA (Platelia-Candida; BioRad).…”

“…Factor G, a horseshoe coagulation factor, was found to be a natural detector of this antigen, and an amebocyte lysate assay for detection of (1!3)-b-D-glucan was developed. The reported sensitivity and specificity for the assay have been very good, ranging from 78-100% and from 88-100%, respectively (24)(25)(26)(27). The (1!3)-b-D-glucan assay does not detect cryptococcosis, and it is also not positive in cases of oral candidiasis or fungal colonization (25,27).…”
