Enniatins fromFusarium avenaceum isolated from balsam fir foliage and their toxicity to spruce budworm larvae,Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

Abstract: Material extracted from hyphae ofFusarium avenaceum, isolated from foliage of balsam fir,Abies balsamea, was toxic to spruce budworm larvae when incorporated into insect diet. The major insecticidal component of the toxic fraction was identified by chemical and spectroscopic methods as enniatin complex, rich in enniatin A/A1. Possible ecological implications of these observations are considered.

“…These results confirm earlier reports of beauvericin-and enniatin-producing strains of F. avenaceum (12,19). The level of beauvericin production varied by strain, indicating that this phenotype is polymorphic in field populations of F. avenaceum.…”

“…Sacc., the anamorphic state of Gibberella avenacea R. Cook, is one of the most important species worldwide (1,4). This species can produce significant quantities of toxic secondary metabolites in vitro, including moniliformin (14) and enniatins (5,19). Fusarium avenaceum isolated from maize can produce beauvericin (12), and we think that beauvericin could be a major cereal contaminant as well.…”

“…This fungus was found by Strongman et a l . to produce a group of cyclohexadepsipeptides, the enniatins, in liquid culture (3). Purification of crude extracts of the mycelia resulted in the isolation of a mixture of the enniatins A , A l , and B 1, which was found to be toxic to spruce budworm larvae at concentrations of 400 ppm (3).…”
