Enhancing Vocational Training in the Post-COVID Era through Mobile Mixed Reality

Abstract: COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions have had a massive impact on engineering education, particularly vocational and practical aspects of training. In this study, we present a novel mixed reality (MR) tool to simulate and guide learners through a simple fault diagnosis task of a three-phase power supply. The tool was created as a web-based application that could be accessed from budget smartphones in order to cover the majority of users. Comparisons were made between novices using MR guidance and those with… Show more

“…At the same time, the results obtained ensure not only the way in which the object "Visualmat" was produced but also how the objects combined in AR and VR; furthermore, the experience suggests the need to prepare a guide that can help students, immerse them in the educational experience and facilitate their interaction with technology. Therefore, the production of technology does not suffice, a use-and-guidance handbook is required too; this conclusion has also been confirmed by other works, including the research study authored by [50]. They compared an AR-based teaching-learning process guided by videos and written explanations with an unguided one.…”

“…Thus, the shift to remote learning had greatly challenged the practical skills subjects (Yabut, 2022) like hairdressing, leaving the students struggling to acquire essential skills in the absence of handson training sessions (Johnson, 2020). Furthermore, the absence of in-person interactions hinders the development of interpersonal and customer service skills which are crucial facets of the hairdressing profession (Smith, 2021). Additionally, Tuazon and Tamayo (2021) highlighted the challenge posed by the limited practical training opportunities in hairdressing programs.…”

“…How to fully integrate the practice into education creates a more practical education model, which is one of the most important issues in the current education mission [7][8]. In recent years, higher education and open education have achieved good consequences from connecting communication to gradual in-depth integration between the two modes of education and from theoretical research to specific practice, while each of them is developing rapidly [9][10].…”
