Enhancing traffic safety with wearable low-resolution displays

Abstract: Safety is a major concern for non-motorized traffic participants, such as cyclists, pedestrians or skaters. Due to their weak nature compared to cars, accidents often lead to serious implications. In this paper, we investigate how additional protection can be achieved with wearable displays attached to a person's arm, leg or back. Different to prior work, we present an extensive study on design considerations for wearable displays in traffic. Based on interviews, experiments, and an online questionnaire with m… Show more

“…Based on existing technologies, we can utilize network surveillance to identify pedestrians, analyze their positions and surroundings, thereby addressing pedestrian safety concerns [2]. Additionally, researchers have proposed the use of wearable display devices attached to clothing, to enhance visibility for vulnerable groups in traffic and improve overall traffic safety [6]. It is evident that researchers place a significant emphasis on traffic safety, particularly for vulnerable groups on the road.…”

“…Wearables attached to a user's body as everyday objects, like a watch, a shirt, shoes, a bracelet, and so on, allow the user to be monitored and/or informed anytime, anywhere. Various such applications have been proposed for healthcare and fitness [11,32,45], social interaction [5,20,21,25], work support [37], safety awareness [1,15], education/training [8,36] and notification of messages. In particular, wrist-worn devices are very popular, boosted by the cultural affinity to watches and bracelets.…”

“…Many signaling devices have been developed to address this issue. Some are designed to be installed on the bicycle, while others are worn by cyclists [1][2][3]. Most such system use control systems similar to those used in motorcycles or automobiles and require active operation.…”
